“Renoir most likely painted this view of Mont Sainte-Victoire, a motif made famous by Paul Cézanne, during a visit to Cézanne at Aix-en-Provence in the summer of 1889. In contrast to Cézanne’s emphasis on structural solidarity, broad brushstrokes and more sobre greens and browns, Renoir dissolves mass and detail in a woven fabric of staccato brushstrokes whose bright colors and varying impasto stress surface pattern rather than volume. The intensity of the light, in combination with the blurring effect of the brushstrokes, creates the effect of atmospheric haze made vibrant by heat and glare.”
