“Nine years his junior, Gauguin was a huge admirer of Paul Cezanne, whose art he revered throughout his life. Having abandoned his job as a stockbroker to dedicate himself to painting – to the dismay of his practical, Danish-born wife Mette, with whom he had five children – he studied intensively not only the landscapes painted in around 1870 by the “father” of impressionism, Camille Pissarro, but also the compositions of Cezanne.

Gauguin made use of a winter and a summer landscape by Cezanne for his attractive fan designs but was also keen to imitate the older master’s parallel brushstrokes in his early still lifes and landscapes. His own art collection included several works by Cezanne, as well as paintings by Pissarro. Completed in 1879, this painting was shown at the fifth impressionist exhibition organised the following year. The composition encapsulates the rich European landscape tradition.

Homage to seventeenth-century Dutch painting and the Italian mannerists was a new phenomenon in French art in the mid-nineteenth century. Gauguin too discovered and explored these pioneering approaches before choosing an entirely new path: inspired by his childhood memories of Peru, as well as by the islands’ mythology and magical worlds of colour, he decided to move to Polynesia.”
